Proceeds benefit Centre Stage Theatre and Community Arts of Elmira.

Centre Stage Community Theatre (CSCT)

In May of 2009 ten people, all dedicated to community theatre, all veterans of the Antlers Community Theatre (ACT) group, met in Corning, NY, to discuss the possibility of forming a new community theatre entity. Though ACT was then, and continues to be, a viable theatre company, its primary function is to raise funds for charities supported by the Corning Lodge of Elks. These ten volunteers decided that a theatre organization with wider community goals was not only a possibility, but also a necessity in an area as dedicated to the arts as this region. From that consensual thought, Centre Stage Community Theatre was born.

Since that moment, the well-known Market Street Irregulars (MSI) group has agreed to continue its theatrical work under the umbrella and with the support of CSCT. In the future, MSI will present dinner theatre and original productions throughout the area with the assistance of and to support CSCT.

CSCT, now in the process of becoming a limited liability, tax-exempt organization, is committed to presenting viable theatre productions for the entertainment of audiences drawn from Steuben, Chemung, Schuyler and Yates counties. The group will consist of any persons interested in presenting quality stage productions. The goal of the group is to be recognized as a strong, contributing and long-term member of the local arts tradition.

As a new group, the obvious goal of CSCT is to raise sufficient funds to enable the group to meet other objectives. To that end, CSCT promises host organizations that it will uphold the finest theatrical traditions. Production standards will be of the highest quality possible. Programs, posters and any advertising communications will meet professional standards. Members of CSCT will be readily available to explain the origins and goals of the company and to promote both CSCT and its hosting body.

Briefly put, if your group seeks to raise funds or promote its profile in the community, CSCT is willing, able and available to help you.

With book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this take on nursery stories turns convention on its head and offers us an ambivalent Cinderella, a blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood and a Prince Charming with an eye for the ladies. They’re all among the cockeyed characters in this fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell–openly swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their choices haunt them later with disastrous results. What begins as a lively and irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
