Airs Above the Ground
Preserved as classical equestrian art, these awe-inspiring movements were originally intended to be used in warfare. Only stallions with the greatest strength, talent and athletic ability are chosen for training in these ancient maneuvers. You will be amazed and delighted with the results… The Airs Above the Ground.
Mezair – A series of successive Levades in which the horse lowers its forefeet to the ground before rising again on hindquarters, achieving forward motion.

Courbette - The horse balances on the hind legs and then jumps, keeping the hind legs together and the forelegs off the ground.

Levade - The horse must maintain a haunched position at a 45-degree angle to the ground, requiring muscle control and perfection of balance that is quite difficult.

Capriole – The stallion leaps into the air, drawing his forelegs under his chest at the height of elevation, and kicks out violently with his hind legs. The capriole can take many years of training.

With book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this take on nursery stories turns convention on its head and offers us an ambivalent Cinderella, a blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood and a Prince Charming with an eye for the ladies. They’re all among the cockeyed characters in this fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell–openly swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their choices haunt them later with disastrous results. What begins as a lively and irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
Directed by Stephen Miller and Musical Direction by Andrew Stow

This year’s event takes place on Friday, September 11th from 5:00pm until 9:00pm and Saturday, September 12th from 11:30am to 5:00pm.
The event kicks off with the Friday night tradition of wine tasting and jazz music throughout the district. Guests may participate in the wine and beer tasting event by purchasing a souvenir wine glass at one of the four checkpoints throughout the district (Centerway Square, Bottles & Corks, the Radisson Hotel Corning and The Site Cyber Bar and Grill). Cost to participate is $10 and is restricted to individuals age 21 and older. ID is required for all participants.
Visitors may sample a variety of wine and beer from a number of award-winning wineries and breweries from the Finger Lakes Region. In addition to the tastings, guests may enjoy live jazz music in over 30 businesses throughout the district.
Families are encouraged to attend the harvest-themed activities on Saturday. Events include grape stomping in Riverfront Centennial Park, hayrides by Spring Wagon Orchards on the pedestrian bridge, a corn on the cob eating contest in Centerway Square, pumpkin painting for children at Imagine That!, along with other activities.
Many businesses will also participate in special promotions and incentives for shoppers throughout the weekend. Visitors are invited to sample fresh apple cider in businesses throughout the district and vote for their favorite scarecrow in the popular annual business owner scarecrow contest.
With the exception of Friday night’s wine tasting, all events are free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Centerway Parking Facility at 2 West Tioga Avenue.
