Airs Above the Ground

Preserved as classical equestrian art, these awe-inspiring movements were originally intended to be used in warfare. Only stallions with the greatest strength, talent and athletic ability are chosen for training in these ancient maneuvers. You will be amazed and delighted with the results… The Airs Above the Ground.

Mezair – A series of successive Levades in which the horse lowers its forefeet to the ground before rising again on hindquarters, achieving forward motion.

Courbette - The horse balances on the hind legs and then jumps, keeping the hind legs together and the forelegs off the ground.

Levade - The horse must maintain a haunched position at a 45-degree angle to the ground, requiring muscle control and perfection of balance that is quite difficult.

Capriole – The stallion leaps into the air, drawing his forelegs under his chest at the height of elevation, and kicks out violently with his hind legs. The capriole can take many years of training.

The Cats have had several interesting line-ups over the years; one being just as entertaining as the next. Despite the changes, Jeff’s distinctive sound on bass has been consistent. Jeff started this band in the mid 90’s, and was initially known as “The Soul Cats”, a three-piece boogie-blues band. At the same time, Jeff also played in a hard rock band called “Sgt. Stress”. When the “Stress” band dissolved, Jeff combined the drummer/lead vocalist, Ron Hurd (Sgt. Stress), with the lead guitarist, Mark Brutvan, of the “Soul Cats”, and changed the name to “The Cats”. The lineup consists of all former members of The Cats at one time or another. Ron Hurd (drums & vocals), along with Steve Terwilliger(singer and muulti-instrumentalist). Mark Brutvan (guitar & vocals) and Jeff Howell( bass & vocals). This band really puts on a show, playing two jammin’, 90 minute sets. Don’t miss out. Check the schedule and come out to a show.

Ultimate Driving School at Watkins Glen
Saturday, September 26, 2009 to Sunday, Sep 27, 2009

Overview:
The Genesee Valley Chapter of the BMW CCA is pleased to invite you to participate in our upcoming High Performance Driving School at Watkins Glen International on September 26-27, 2009. In conjunction with the driving school, we will also host a BMW CCA Club Race at this event. This Club Race is named in honor of Stan Parker who passed away earlier this year. Stan was one of the original BMW Club Racers, a Comp Steward, one of the founding members of GVC BMW CCA, and instrumental in starting our driving school program.

The GVC Chapter has over 25 years of experience conducting HPD Schools at Watkins Glen and is nationally recognized for its structured, state-of-the-art, 2-day driving programs emphasizing skill development and safety. Our certified in-car instructors coach you through all levels of your skill development, from novice drivers to club racers and instructor candidates, reinforcing what is taught during classroom sessions that cover high performance driving techniques.

For those new to the sport and / or new to driving at Watkins Glen, we provide extensive written materials to help you prepare prior to coming to the track and an orientation the night before the event that covers an overview of what to expect, where to go and how to prepare, so that you get the most out of your time at the track.

At the end of the first day of driving, everyone is encouraged to take the guided “Track walk” where you are transported around the track and are allowed to walk each corner while receiving expert pointers from the classroom instructor. After the “Track walk,” we convene back at the garage, where you can meet and mingle with other car enthusiasts, drivers and instructors at our “Garage Party.” Enjoy a variety of appetizers, beer and wine with friends and family. To commemorate the event and give you bragging rights back home, you will receive a limited edition “Ultimate Driving School” T-shirt and “Tech sticker” for your car.

This is your chance to experience the premier and legendary Watkins Glen road-course, with its top notch track facilities and GVC’s High Performance Driving program. The town of Watkins Glen is located at the southern-most tip of Seneca Lake, a summer resort with nearby parks, lodging, restaurants, shops and fun activities for the whole family.

Event Details:
GVC BMW CCA events are not limited to BMW cars and owners. Cars of any marque are allowed as long as they meet specified technical and safety requirements and are NOT convertibles, trucks or SUV’s (including X5’s, X3’s, and Porsche Cayennes.)

For this event we plan to accept ~100 students, divided across 3 run groups. A combined Advanced ‘A’ and ‘B’ Group (~20+ Days), an Intermediate ‘C’ Group (~5-20 Days), and a Novice ‘D’ Group (~0-4 Days). The number of days of experience is approximate.

There will also be a Club Race at this school – Enjoy watching the racers.

With book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this take on nursery stories turns convention on its head and offers us an ambivalent Cinderella, a blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood and a Prince Charming with an eye for the ladies. They’re all among the cockeyed characters in this fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell–openly swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their choices haunt them later with disastrous results. What begins as a lively and irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.

Directed by Stephen Miller and Musical Direction by Andrew Stow
