River Friends Plans Eco-Recreation Trips For Summer 2009

The Friends of the Chemung River Watershed will hold several eco-recreation trips along the beautiful Chemung River this summer. Each event will be led by Chris Merola, a New York state licensed professional guide and owner of Ranger Outfitters in Corning.

Each Saturday trip includes a river-related educational presentation, a light lunch and bottled water at the end of each trip, as well as the opportunity to have fun, exercise and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Chemung River. An adult must accompany anyone under age 16. No pets or alcoholic beverages are allowed, but participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, camera, sunscreen, insect repellent, trail snacks and canteens of water.

The lunches are donated to River Friends by Barb’s Soups On Café in Elmira. Participants are encouraged to pre-register, as there are a limited number of openings for each outing.

Scheduled events:

Aug. 22: 8:30 to 11 a.m. Mountain bike along the river. Start at Pirozzolo Park, behind the West Elmira Town Hall on West Water Street, cycle to Bradley Farms in Southport and back to Pirozzolo Park (about 12 miles). Educational theme: Rorick’s Glen, a popular entertainment spot on the river in the early 20th century. The fee is $7 in advance and $10 on Aug. 22. Limited to 15 cyclists.

Additional eco-recreation events will be announced in the future.
