Maxx Reunion Harry’s Friday July 30 2010 9 pm

The annual reunion of Maxx, an Elmira Heights based classic rock band, will take place at Harry’s, Elmira Heights, Friday, July 30th at 9  PM.  Maxx was founded in 1977 with  members Aldo Iannarilli, Bill Cristofaro, Mark Palmer and Joel Carberry.  It all started when Bill jammed with Aldo and Joel who where playing at a keg pary.  Bill realized they had real talent and called Joel the next week to ask if they wanted to jam some more.  They started playing in Joels garage and a month later Mark Palmer joined adding the finishing touch…Maxx was Born. Maxx was the Only band In NYS history to win 3 county battle of the bands.  Others members include Bucky Sheldon.  They reunite every year at Harry’s to jam, so come rock with them!

Elmira’s Warm Up To Summer Music Festival Sat. 6/12/10 3pm – 11pm

Saturday June 12th 2010 at 600 Erie St. Elmira 14904 (across from Mandell’s Restaurant 732-9400) From 3 till 11 pm.  No one under 21 years old admitted.

Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen

Sleek and sexy sports cars, along with many of the world’s best sports car drivers, will take your breath away during this six-hour competition of speed and endurance. The weekend kicks off with the Continental Tire 150 on Saturday!

Road racing fans have a wealth of entertainment to enjoy today at beautiful Watkins Glen International.  The forecast calls for high temperatures in the mid 70s and sunshine all day.

The NASCAR Camping World Series Tioga Downs 125 at The Glen kicked off at 10:00 AM. Matt DiBenedetto was on the pole ahead of Antonio Perez, with defending race winner Matt Kobyluck starting fourth.

The day’s headline event is the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen Rolex Sports Car Series race. Scott Pruett will lead the field of Daytona Prototypes and Grand Touring machines to the green flag at 2:00 PM.

Only $20 (children 12 and under are free with a paying adult) gets you in to see all the action. Not only will you enjoy exciting on-track racing, but there is a wealth of other activities. At noon, there will be an autograph session with the stars of the Grand Am Rolex Series including Pruett, actor/driver Patrick Dempsey, and 2009 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona champions Darren Law, David Donohue, and Buddy Rice.

The Sahlen’s 3rd Annual Hotdog Eating Contest gets underway at 5:30 PM, followed by the Saturday Night Concert featuring Mike Brindisi and the New York Rock on the Red Car Summer Stage next to the Budweiser Tiki Bar.

Follow the racing action on WRCE 1490 on the AM dial. Speed TV will broadcast the start of the race, from 2:00PM-4:00PM. The exciting finish of the race can be seen from 6:00PM-8:30PM. Check you cable or satellite provider for details.

Stereopticon at Hogans Saturday 4/17/10 9:30 pm

Stereopticon is a rock/improv jam band and will be performing at Hogans this Saturday night.  The band consists of Kevin, Jonny, Dan, and Jesse who recognized their strong connection together and decided to to expand their talents of jamming. They soon began writing original songs with a jam theme.  To hear the original sound of Stereopticon, come to Hogans and jam along!

FINGER LAKES WINE COUNTRY CELEBRATES MARK TWAIN APRIL 2010

The following events will take place from April 21, the death date, through April 24, the day he was laid to rest at Elmira’s Woodlawn Cemetery:

 • Wednesday, April 21, (Death Centennial) Hal Holbrook to perform his Emmy & Tony award-winning performance of Mark Twain Tonight at Clemens Center for the Performing Arts.

• Saturday, April 24, Re-enactment of Twain’s gravesite service and burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. The event will use details provided by articles from the New York Post and New York Times along with other historical sources, and will include a horse drawn carriage transporting the casket.

 • Wednesday, April 21 – Saturday, April 24, Trolley into Twain Country Tours Centennial Excursions, One hour guided tours that will include a stop to go inside the Mark Twain Study (where Twain penned such classics as Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while summering in Elmira with his in-laws for 22 years) and the Clemens family burial site at Woodlawn Cemetery.

 • Wednesday, April 21 – Friday, April 23, Dine like Twain dinners to be offered at Hill Top Restaurant. Feast on Twain’s favorite foods while overlooking the exact same view of the Chemung River Valley that inspired him to create such beloved characters as Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher and Huck Finn at the family home on the same hill.

 • April 22 & 24, Twain Notes, A theatrical reading of the personal correspondence of Samuel Clemens and those closest to him, from the time he met his beloved wife, Olivia Langdon, through his final days. Held at The Park Church, of which Twain was a member.

 • Saturday April 24, Tom Sawyer & Becky Thatcher Day at Harris Hill, Harris Hill, the Soaring Capital of America, welcomes Twain enthusiasts to take a glider ride over Mark Twain Country and view the Twain Exhibit at the National Soaring Museum, or join in a Tom Sawyer & Becky Thatcher in a game of putt-putt at Harris Hill Amusement Park.

 

Other events in Mark Twain Country during 2010 include scenic glider, vintage plane and helicopter rides over the spectacular views that inspired the author; the dedication of a Twain hiking trail overlooking the Chemung River and complete with Twain quotes; Trolley into Twain Country Tours throughout July and August, the release of a commemorative Twain-labeled Riesling from award-winning Glenora Wine Cellars, and much, much more. Visitors are also encouraged to pay their respects to this American Classic at Woodlawn Cemetery, enjoy a tour of the Mark Twain Study, or visit the permanent display a the Chemung Valley History Museum.
